Charlie Gehringer, a/k/a “The Mechanical Man,” second baseman for the Detroit Tigers during their World Series-winning 1935 season. “If somebody asked me a question I would answer them,” said Gehringer, commenting on his taciturn persona. “If somebody said ‘Pass the salt,’ I would pass the salt.”
